Catching up...April 2012

Every winter, I promise myself I'll get up on the slopes again, but every winter, the time goes by, and we don't go!
Well this year, we finally went, for the first time since before Bailee was born over 9 years ago! We headed up to Brighton on April 6, 2012. It was late in the season, but luckily there had been a huge storm, and there was a TON of fresh powder! It was so fun to just be alone with Kevin, and doing something we love together! Now we're excited to take the older kids so they can start learning. :)

Last winter, some of us decided as a family to run the SL half together. The race was on April 21, 2012. There were 6 of us, plus we ran into Kevin's cousin Julie at the finish line. Didn't get a pic with her though. :P
This was Kevin's first long distance race, and he trained a total of 0 Miles!! And he still beat me! The punk.
Kevin's brother Kyle trained well, and he was REALLY fast! See times below.

L to R, Kevin: 1:51:22, Tia: 1:57:25, Brianne: 1:51:02, Kyle: 1:30:09 (71st overall out of 3,496 finishers!!), Glade: 2:06:47, James: 2:10:38.

My sister, our mom, and I.

Kevin was pretty sore, but he did great!!

Only one blister, and one dead toenail this time. :)

On April 27, I went on my first backpacking trip of the season. My cousin Rob and my brother Kody took us to the Maze District in Canyonlands. They had gone the previous year, and wanted to go back again. It is the most remote of the 3 Canyonlands districts, and you have to drive for 80 miles on a dirt road just to get to the trailhead. The last 2.5 hours are on very rough & bumpy roads like this one:

So you can imagine how vulnerable you feel out there, miles and miles away from any cell phone service. There were very few other hikers there.

At the trailhead, you immediately start descending down into the maze.

You can do it mostly with no rope. We had to use rope on only a couple spots the entire time.

At Harvest Scene. Roughly 2,000 years old.

Camp, night 1.

Hallie is my cousin Rob's 8 year old daughter. She is the toughest 8 year old you will ever meet. And so sweet! I loved having her with us!

We did a lot of climbing in and out of canyons.

Chimney Rock.

The staircase just seems to be floating on a wall. But it was really sturdy!

Confluence, where the Green River and the Colorado River meet. (Right side of the pic.)

Beehive Arch.

Camp, night 2, at the Dollhouse.

Sunrise, Day 3.

The Granary.

Climbing back out.

The group near the end of the 40+ miles.
Chimney Rock WAY off in the distance on the left, Chocolate Drops on the right.
This is only a portion of the pictures. If you care to see more, go to my album on my FB page.

It was an unbelievable experience!

Your backpacking trip looks amazing! Great pictures as always - you should seriously be on one of those SUV commercials. Your life seems charmingly perfect, but you're such a kind, amazing person, how can we fault you for being wonder woman?
