The Sound of Music

I LOVE this movie. I guess I had forgotten how much I loved it until a couple of weeks ago. I bought the 40th anniversary DVD probably a year ago, just knowing that it was a movie I wanted my kids to grow up with. Then it went on my shelf. On a nice Sunday afternoon, I wanted to just sit down to a good "Sunday movie" like my parents called them. I pulled it off the shelf and took off all the annoying "new DVD" wrapping, and the magic had begun. As a child, I remember watching this movie on Sunday evenings with my family. I couldn't believe how quickly the words of the songs came back to me. They were all still there right in my head, as if I had watched the movie the day before. I was singing along, happily. Then all the memories flooded back of making homemade popcorn, melting the butter, and pouring it all in our huge green tupperware bowl then sitting on the floor watching the movie. Wondering what a beesting was. I didn't realize it was 2 words at the time. I always thought Liesl was the prettiest one, and couldn't wait until I was 16 going on 17. I adored Gretl, the youngest. And we always laughed at how they fell in the water out of the canoe, but laughed at Fredrick's fall the most. But I think this is my favorite part now, when the children come in the house sopping wet, and while 'captain' is arguing with Maria outside, he tells her to pack her bags, and suddenly hears the children singing the sound of music to the baroness. Then he goes inside and actually joins in the singing with them. And the part where he sings "Edelweiss" with his daughter Liesl brought tears to my eyes. This is a movie I will treasure forever. And my girls are already going around the house singing, Do-re-mi, and lay ee odl lay ee odl lay hee hoo. They love the puppet part the most I think!

Thanks, Camille, for teaching me how to post the videos!!

I love this movie as well. I have so many fond memories of it too and thank you for the Edelweiss music. I love playing it on the piano.

Okay, how to post a video.

If you click on your link, you are taken to the YouTube website and the video starts to play.

Look in the right hand column and you will see a gray box. There you will see "embed" and a white box with a bunch of stuff written in the white box.

If you click on the writing in the white box, it automatically highlights it. Copy it (ctrl+c).

Go to your create a post page on your blog. Click on Edit HTML. Now paste (ctrl+v).

If you now go to preview, you will see the video there! You can still type more stuff in and do what you want before you post it.

Good luck!

Tia,
Thank you so much for your child-
hood memories concerning the sound of music. Strange coincidence that I watched that movie on TV on a sunday around the time you were going thru this too. It brought tears to me also. I am grateful for your remembrance of us (mom in particular) that we watch only wholesome movies on sunday. It made our sundays more special.
As I watched it, some remembrances came back to me that I'd like to share with everyone.
What a change the Father needed to make in his heart under pressure from her. But it was the music which touched him. Did you notice how astounded his children were when he walked into the room and started singing with them? They looked at each other in some surprise. Later he said to Maria:
..."you brought music back into our lives. I had forgotten. I want you to stay. I ask--you to stay."
Her response:"If I can be of any help." Then his: "You already have--more than you know." This is what has always touched me so much in my life--THE MUSIC. It is the language which touches the soul.
One sunday when we were watching this movie, I distinctly remember the scene in the garden area when he told her: "well, you can't marry someone, when you're in love with someone else--can you!" When they embraced I looked at Shane and he had tears in his eyes. It was so touching. I'm sure you all did.
I am grateful that you shared with us these positive memories, they are encouraging and something we all need right now, and all the time. There is plenty of trouble and saddness and dificulties all
around us to deal with and overcome.
Thanks,

Dad
